<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pictures are pretty darn important when trying to market a piece. They can make or break a sale, or be the deciding factor in whether or not your high-dollar piece actually brings in the amount it's worth. I cringe when I see dark or poorly-angled shots on the sales pages. So, I thought I'd write a little Model Horse Photography 101 article and list what I'm using at the moment to get the shots I do. I'm going to also tell you right now that good photography equipment is NOT cheap. It is, however, worth every penny and will be a much required investment if you really want to show off the quality of your work and sales pieces. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZBcnsw-gEgbN6iFLEzg4hnLFz-IARFLBxhX08EOrisb9vGTkJKXqPJwRM7moPwmVT1pQivtb4IHXrCc2DJwyGm8qUmzn-FnrG9h3BfygBo-jZAjjIpQWzoOjaD37PBV59hPM1LoxanmE/s1600/eos_40D_review_final.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="149" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZBcnsw-gEgbN6iFLEzg4hnLFz-IARFLBxhX08EOrisb9vGTkJKXqPJwRM7moPwmVT1pQivtb4IHXrCc2DJwyGm8qUmzn-FnrG9h3BfygBo-jZAjjIpQWzoOjaD37PBV59hPM1LoxanmE/s320/eos_40D_review_final.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />My go-to camera is a Canon EOS 40D. It's "old" in terms of digital cameras but it continues to do it's job. I've done 10' long by 6' tall exhibit booth backdrops for the family biz with photos taken by this camera and could stand them up right next door to Garmin's booth with their high-dollar graphics and be proud of the work. I bought it used (owner used it once) back when it was being discontinued and the 50D was coming out so I got a good deal. My point is that you don't have to fork over thousands to get a really nice camera if you're smart about it. For the model horse photography, I use the standard lens that came with the camera body - which is a Canon 28-135 mm lens with the image stabilizer. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lighting - the god of photography. While a somewhat cloudy day is perfect for outside shots, I don't like depending on the weather. Our Colorado sunlight is especially harsh for photo subjects as well. It really is best if you can figure out a studio lighting situation. You want a temperature range that is not too cool and not too yellow or you will get green and red shots respectively. You can alter these in Photoshop if you must, but it's really better to try to set things up so you spend the least amount of time editing photos at a computer as possible. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My personal photo area is in a basement room with a slit of a window (read: no natural light whatsoever), so I really need to make my own light. If you can let natural window light filter into your room, but not shine directly on your piece, that's best. Please please please do NOT take a photo of your horse with the window as the background. Your camera will hate you and will decide to darken your shots into just about silhouettes of whatever it was you were trying to photograph. Your camera lens reads only that it's pointing at a ton of light and so therefore adjusts the brightness of the shot down to compensate, giving you a shadowed-out shot. You'll get this look any time you point your lens directly at a light source. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My basement room has a ceiling fixture that is just three bulbs (no cover or anything pretty on those). Even with a flash, this is not enough light. To boost the brightness without adding glare, I did purchase (on Melanie Miller's recommendation) some "cheap" studio lights. One of these lightboxes goes on each side of my subject: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Fancierstudio-softbox-lighting-carrying-Single/dp/B0056C0H00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage">http://www.amazon.com/Fancierstudio-softbox-lighting-carrying-Single/dp/B0056C0H00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage</a> </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimLTHMa8d-yFVBWgReFGiaf7SQRT7UVn7yqH6fJFy_FZWSKqb4qkaAh4tMLX15UH3godtWC8U_gK5US41btgzArwIbDVti9RQ9rQcqp9Ckw0noO4alkpn9Hz09eJZPIkOiShf8DlqRseU/s1600/IMG_2801.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimLTHMa8d-yFVBWgReFGiaf7SQRT7UVn7yqH6fJFy_FZWSKqb4qkaAh4tMLX15UH3godtWC8U_gK5US41btgzArwIbDVti9RQ9rQcqp9Ckw0noO4alkpn9Hz09eJZPIkOiShf8DlqRseU/s320/IMG_2801.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The one on the left is as far away from the piece as I can get as there is shelving right behind it. I have tables on the right so that one is as close as I can get it. The ideal situation would be 1' away on each side. There are five light bulbs in each "lightbox" and so I can adjust the lighting to make it even. I usually have about three turned on in the left one and all five turned on in the right one when shooting resins. I keep mine more or less beside the subject and turned slightly away from me to face it and the background. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGY_HoH4a7n6s67WrOvAhTPtC5NWSLVvD9aHgGu4se6MyN-nTt4AhC-EIxzTp3RQNbbtD43GmXeAC0vq9R1hHGqoqvK2t74_gpZYP0Qjsil50jgAI-bUCWi_KK8JEJ2GrSyQIG1wnWbDA/s1600/IMG_2803.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGY_HoH4a7n6s67WrOvAhTPtC5NWSLVvD9aHgGu4se6MyN-nTt4AhC-EIxzTp3RQNbbtD43GmXeAC0vq9R1hHGqoqvK2t74_gpZYP0Qjsil50jgAI-bUCWi_KK8JEJ2GrSyQIG1wnWbDA/s320/IMG_2803.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Camera flashes are a big help, but they do create a lot of glare if you don't use them properly. You can pick up cheap-o diffusers on Amazon for under $10 that will make a huge difference in giving you more light without the shine. If you REALLY get serious, then you can do what I just did and buy a separate flash. I can't recommend this option enough. Unlike the camera's stock flash, this one is directionally adjustable and far more powerful. This means I can point the flash upward to "bounce" off the ceiling and get the nice soft glow of light without the flash glare on the horse. You can also use it as a "slave" and move it around your studio to give you different options besides the directly-in-front option. I'm using Canon's Speedlite 430ES II flash and I just love it. It's made photographing so much easier and left me with far fewer hours to put in editing photos in Photoshop. Canon has it on sale right now: </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/flashes/speedlite-430ex-ii">https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/flashes/speedlite-430ex-ii</a> It's worth the money. Trust me. I wish I'd have bought this baby 10 years ago when I got the camera. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Positioning. When it comes to model photos, nothing is more frustrating to me than seeing a shot looking down on the horse. Anyone can see how unflattering it is. It's also incredibly lazy. Bend your arse down to be looking straight at your subject. Seriously. One little squat to take a photo will not kill you. Sit on a stool if you need to. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another less obvious mistake I see a lot of people doing is that they put their subject 2" away from the backdrop. Now, I can understand that some folks just won't have room to much more than this, but if you can, drag your background forward several feet. This allows your camera to focus on the subject and blur out the background, making sure your eye only focuses on the part you want it to and not get cluttered with extra stuff to be distracted by. It makes an okay shot a professional-looking shot. Notice in the photo above I've also pulled the backdrop forward so that there's no "fold" in the backcorner. You want it as smooth as possible. Having your subject forward will also help to prevent the shadow of your piece showing up from the flash. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizcvYlGTiGQVHdLXXSxWJDMiKXvlW_taUJnoWq-gPgQbLBNsFNwtSD34MlJRxP-lgQe-VfWu97UGonLeIv-LnUrkDmEixq1G92ER4ctXxl9FCznVTbF1sjD__DMyFIxTQ5ZSgeT99nP18/s1600/boydston1d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizcvYlGTiGQVHdLXXSxWJDMiKXvlW_taUJnoWq-gPgQbLBNsFNwtSD34MlJRxP-lgQe-VfWu97UGonLeIv-LnUrkDmEixq1G92ER4ctXxl9FCznVTbF1sjD__DMyFIxTQ5ZSgeT99nP18/s320/boydston1d.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />My backdrop is painted muslin that I got from Silverlake Photo back when they sold pieces cheaper on ebay. I don't think I'd buy from them now as they're crazy-expensive. When looking for a backdrop, try to keep it neutral and medium-toned. You want something that will work with all colors of horses (gray and sand colors work well) and you want it mid-toned so that your camera has a nice mid range color to focus on to give your photograph proper white balance and not over or under expose your photos. I like a little bit of mottle just to keep it from appearing flat. Don't go crazy with lots of color or an obnoxious color. Remember it is the BACKGROUND and your horse needs to be the star without having to clash with anything for attention. </div>

I finished this gal up a couple weeks ago, but have neglected to find time to put her up on the site. So, she's a great excuse for a blog post! And because I've been lax in my blogging, I'm putting a veritable smorgasbord of photos up! Rose is a commission piece and is not for sale.</div>

I'm thrilled to finally be able to start circulating these gals! While she's #2 in the run, this is the first earthenware Darcy finished by myself. Karen Gerhardt beat me with the first finished one out there period! ;) She has been done in overgrlazes to a nice red chestnut. Read all about her and see more pictures on her MyAuctionBarn page as she's up for bidding for the next two days!</div>

I'm thinking that my lighting was a bit off the night I took all these photos before I handed the horses off to their owners the next day at Springamathing. I'm really not happy with how any of these photos came out. It just seems like they're not as sharp as usual and don't seem to be picking up on the amount of depth and shading in these pieces. </div>

In the above photo, the interference gold and metallic gold dustings he has are really picking up the light, causing certain areas to get a yellow hue. He's really a lovely tawny color in person. </div>

Since there's a storm going on all around us, I thought it befitting my next completed horse showcase be of the Stormwatch resin. This guy is a lot of people's favorite resin and it's not hard to see why. He has an enormous amount of presence! And frankly, his head is probably the finest in the hobby.</div>

I figured I'd move into the next Colorado horse, but then I realized that every horse photo'd with the exception of Dainy Darcy in that group shot was a CO horse. Funny how that worked out. Either way, Jane's Reiner is next. </div>

So, since the website is down for major updating, the blog gets to be the star child here in posting a batch of those new photos for all the models I finished lately. I'm still learning the little differences between CS2 and CS6 (oh my) so photo editing is a bit of a pain right now. By editing, I mean cropping, adjusting color to get it as close as possible to the real model, and adding my copyright tag. My camera and light setup get me pretty close, but not 100% there. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last update you got a peek at the lineup. Well, more have been added since that photo, but let's start with those, huh? First up...drumroll please... is <a href="http://braymere.blogspot.com/2011/11/ready-to-paint.html" target="_blank">Roundapony</a>! If you click the link you'll see Roundapony is a collaboration of sorts between lots of Colorado gals. He's Karen Gerhardt's <a href="http://wizardsvalearts.com/2013/01/28/last-2-unpainted-roundabout-cob-resins-available/" target="_blank">Roudabout</a> cob resin (I think she has only a couple of these left in resin if you want to buy one!), and is actually one of the master waste mold casts. That cast made it into Jennifer Buxton's capable hands where he got transformed from a Classic scale British Heavy Show Cob to a Traditional scale pony because 1) Jennifer has a *bit* of a *thing* for ponies, and 2) she only shows Trad. performance. Lastly, this cutie made his way to me! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I am a huge fan of well-done customizing. To me, not only does the customizing have to be realistic, correct anatomically, and done with professional caliber, it has to "match the piece." It has to be changed, but remain the same if that makes any sense. How Jennifer managed to take a horse that was meant to be a British Heavy Show Cob and turn him into a cute little show pony and keep him ultimately the same horse I can't put into words, but she did just that.</div>

As you can see, all that Colorado work really came together nicely on this piece! I'm always hoping to do more stuff like this as it's fun to work with ladies like Jennifer and Karen. Stay tuned for the next model up! You'll just have to wait and see who it is!</div>

Lots of horses are getting painted and preparing to get out the studio door over here! I haven't had time to crop or edit (to correct color when necessary) any of their photos yet, but I have these guys pictured below photographed and uploaded to my computer. I have a Victrix in there as well, though she was a day late to join these for their group photo shoot. Probably a good thing as my background was barely big enough for these five!</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Stay tuned for more photos of these five and the Victrix shortly! And then five-six MORE horses after that! I'm on a painting spree!</div>

Despite the old, old, <i>old</i> joke, she's really not a pony. So, what is this adorable girl doing on my blog? Well, I figure this is my place for my creative ventures. I've posted my <a href="http://aspenleafstudios.blogspot.com/2012/01/more-pure-happiness.html" target="_blank">sewing projects</a> (and just realized I never showed the finished piece!), and of course the sculpting, painting, molding, and casting of both resin and ceramic horses, but I haven't shown any photography yet. </div>

These two photos are among many that I took of my 1.5 year old St. Bernard Mookie. She got a much needed bath today and looked so pretty actually being clean for once I knew I had to document the experience. For those of you who don't know her, Mooks is a mud girl. The lighting for the photos came out great! And I played a little with Photoshop CS6 to bring out the colors and shadings just the way I wanted them. These two were my favorite of the group.</div>

It's late, the light is bad, and I'm squinting because of it. It's a good place to stop before I can't see to go upstairs to bed! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I've gotten my highlight/body color on a new face: Amelia's Eberl "Rose" as well as the first layer of dry-brushed shadow. This horse's reference is this amazing dark bay with these bright dapples. The lower shoulder/elbow area got a little sampling of it tonight, but I was starting to pull off that first dry-brushed layer. It's kind of a fluke that it wasn't dry enough to rub on it. Usually those thin layers dry pretty quickly. I'm thinking it's because I added some linseed oil to smooth the edges out more for a better blending zone. Something I'll have to keep in mind for next time. The much softer edges are well worth extra drying time though! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Rose is one of those pieces that really changes when you put paint on her. This sculpture is extremely nice, but doesn't really come across that way being unpainted. I was shocked at how much I fell in love with her when she started to get her color! I'm excited to show you all how nice a "simple-colored horse" can look!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
And, some more work done on JerryLynn's Sencillo. While the crappy lighting doesn't do anything for him, the main reason I posted this photo is the sections of different progress. From his head to his withers/elbow, his oil layers are finished. His tummy area shows the initial shadow layer. Lastly, that rump shows where I started with the highlight and body color oil base. You can see that the burnt umber adds a nice blanket of warmth to him. The raw umber gives him that "soot" look my customer wanted. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSCkldLagEEjTJ5DxygdL0yZpDkkt1Dcduna68EQK3XiDNdanVePeH_rjYsW_etXLbVcI7-z18Ev4K2ImAreyRzByV0VuWqCnb2Myosd1lTTVb-CiGfsHp33JPPFlO39Z1OnUJWoNd_F0/s1600/sencillo2bs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSCkldLagEEjTJ5DxygdL0yZpDkkt1Dcduna68EQK3XiDNdanVePeH_rjYsW_etXLbVcI7-z18Ev4K2ImAreyRzByV0VuWqCnb2Myosd1lTTVb-CiGfsHp33JPPFlO39Z1OnUJWoNd_F0/s320/sencillo2bs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
JerryLynn also wants him graying and battle-scared on top of the overo markings. I found some great photos of old horses (mid 30's) that showed their gray gene only just starting to kick in. There was a high concentration of graying around the face, in the flanks, behind the elbows...the usual places that go first. I've laid down some white hairs in oil in the front section that has the final raw umber rub. That area will get lots more hairs added individually in pencil. Then comes the overo markings, and then those scars. Then I get to happily hand him off to his patient owner!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
One last thing to share about Sencillo. While glazing a ceramic Darcy in linseed oil, I started trying the removal of color to reveal the dapples instead of just "outlining" them in dark tones. While it failed miserably on china (though a swap in mediums solved those issues), the same technique is fantastic on resin/cold-painting. I find it gives me a great irregular dapple, and by using a somewhat worse-for-wear brush I get this amazing soft hair look. It doesn't show in the photo near as well as in person (possibly because it's wet and very glarey) but the effect is much more realistic than the technique I was using before. I'll try to get a good closeup when he's finished so you can see what I'm talking about.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Now I hear my bed calling...</div>

There is a live show coming up at the end of May. Live shows are probably the best motivation for me to finish horses. There's just something about the excitement of it that pushes me to work harder and do more. The real job has been hectic lately, but I've been putting in really late nights for the models to get things done. It leaves me pretty tired, but very satisfied! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I've got about 9 or so horses I want to finish. They're all in various stages of completion, but the majority are pretty close to done. It seems to be how I work. There's usually not one horse finished, wait another month another horse finished, etc. It always seem to work out that I finish a small army of horses at once. And when I do, it's FANTASTIC! I can almost hear the hallelujah chorus now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
These two just got oil layers on recently so they're the stars of the show for today. The first is a Sencillo resin. This will be the second that I've painted. I sold off half my very limited amount of personal copies which I had originally planned on painting, leaving me with two left. One will be used to mold the ceramic edition, the other will be for my personal painted collection - which consists of like three half-painted horses. X^D. Anyway, I don't plan on taking any more Sencillo commissions, so the two gals besides myself that have these painted-by-me Sencillo's will have pretty rare items on their hands. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The owner of this guy requested a old graying sooty buckskin overo. He's pictured below with his light and medium tones finished, and he's now at the point where I can drybrush on some shadow and soot. The photo was taken at night with my iPhone and while the color is close, he's slightly more gold in person. The soot and shadow will make a big difference. When the body color is the way I want it, I'll start penciling in those old gray hairs. I found a fantastic reference photo for this! Then I'll add the overo markings to take him over the top. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This next piece is Roundapony. You've probably seen this pony before on <a href="http://braymere.blogspot.com/2011/11/ready-to-paint.html" target="_blank">Jennifer Buxton's blog</a>. I really enjoyed reading her progress on this piece as she took him from a really rough master cast to a fantastic customized "pony". Jennifer has a bit of a thing for ponies. ^_^. So when she got her hands on a master cast of Karen Gerhardt's Roundabout resin, she knew where she wanted to take him. Jennifer is also a trading model horse goddess. She's fantastic about trading services with, and since I hate prepping so much lots of my rough guys end up over there. In exchange I get to pick a model from her amazing nekkid collection to paint. When Roundapony was one of those options, how could I *not* pick him?? Sorry Tiffany Purdy, but I get this one!</div>

He's shown in his first layer of oils too. He's got a long way to go before he's just right, but he's making a good start. And I'm happy to say that he's being a good little pony and is probably one of two horses out the many in my studio that is not giving me fits getting him painted. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I love the fact that this guy is hunter clipped! I've not painted anything like that before and it's just a fun little change. Again, still a long way to go to get that body smooth and glowing in both the clipped and non-clipped areas. You'll see what I mean when the finished photos go up later.</div>

Isn't his face *adorable*?! He's just a cute little stinker and I'm really enjoying myself painting him. When the bay body is where I want it, Jennifer also wants some tobiano markings on him. It just dawned on me that pretty much all my commissions left over are pinto horses! You can definitely see what's en vogue in the hobby. </div>

This post runs almost too late at night to remain Wednesday for some of you readers, but I'll swing it in under the wire to get my post title! </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Given the complete lack of light, the photos are not my best. However they give a good idea of the changes made to this little gal. She's pretty much done at this point except for her chest/underbelly/groin area. Those areas shouldn't take too long to finish and then I'll make my mold to get my master copy. That's where the real work begins. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhkOCaViU61o_d-4RtsoFSR29avK3ih54VA7hGItwVIUD2u0VKxmEVlXcm0uNktTlX9yN3wA4YQ530egnFg4lHiJpBfLw4ubGE8mobiKTUURMMPdbWxAai0ovRbZjbjY0t0vZ6fhXrHGQ/s1600/IMG_5482s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhkOCaViU61o_d-4RtsoFSR29avK3ih54VA7hGItwVIUD2u0VKxmEVlXcm0uNktTlX9yN3wA4YQ530egnFg4lHiJpBfLw4ubGE8mobiKTUURMMPdbWxAai0ovRbZjbjY0t0vZ6fhXrHGQ/s320/IMG_5482s.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Those ears really need thinning and refining for that particular Saddlebred look. I loved the flagged tail!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-eYIIJDKVCMg31HDNBPy6Ug0KvJ7bZXcHxvQJvgv0adfcauYAIr6EuxIydsotWR9tTZklj2KP2RUVaOFhKM3uiyMn9MdySS7xC-52QhWcetD5HdvOvr9NB01viFMSgXMW6Em16_77sT4/s1600/IMG_5483s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-eYIIJDKVCMg31HDNBPy6Ug0KvJ7bZXcHxvQJvgv0adfcauYAIr6EuxIydsotWR9tTZklj2KP2RUVaOFhKM3uiyMn9MdySS7xC-52QhWcetD5HdvOvr9NB01viFMSgXMW6Em16_77sT4/s320/IMG_5483s.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I also loved the roached mane/forelock. It allows me to leave that neck exposed. As much as I love to sculpt hair on a horse, when you have such a beautiful neck, sometimes it's hard on me to have to cover it up.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvvlwiL8sSHyPqz3fuMPTPkvdAgqemW-1h0h_fopTctOt_Po5bsv43PFh6pHuAz0ROwHIFplRVYnGxCGwMe7-BJsC9mpzX0lIX0x5ivm7F5RFaDQ-Aoevz3nFyo5lfSfDxdqV_LF50GCc/s1600/IMG_5486s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="274" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvvlwiL8sSHyPqz3fuMPTPkvdAgqemW-1h0h_fopTctOt_Po5bsv43PFh6pHuAz0ROwHIFplRVYnGxCGwMe7-BJsC9mpzX0lIX0x5ivm7F5RFaDQ-Aoevz3nFyo5lfSfDxdqV_LF50GCc/s320/IMG_5486s.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I also adore the action of this piece! The resin legs will be heated and tilted in more to show the almost perfectly in-line positioning of the weight-bearing legs. That back hock needs tucking in more too. I had a blast really watching how these guys moved to get the dynamic twisting of the joints correct.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmNRTdgsb5EQBtniIBIdEsaeAEE9ScbBDiSJzy7gHb-sCjPeiRVZ_TRdJPfME9Dzmxsnc8Wv8qnTyv7wFaME5cGQbd11C7gzUcNW2SS5kPhgaOmJdbzGe9NoVzK6xv3qmTljmQV2A-X6M/s1600/IMG_5478s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmNRTdgsb5EQBtniIBIdEsaeAEE9ScbBDiSJzy7gHb-sCjPeiRVZ_TRdJPfME9Dzmxsnc8Wv8qnTyv7wFaME5cGQbd11C7gzUcNW2SS5kPhgaOmJdbzGe9NoVzK6xv3qmTljmQV2A-X6M/s320/IMG_5478s.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Notice the difference in the head? Besides some ear shaping (remember, thinning will come later in more durable resin form), I completely repositioned and resculpted her eyes. I added a little more to the front lower cheeks, and also reshaped the top of the nose a little. It really helped to make her look more like the breed she is portraying. Those ears getting thinned will make a huge difference in finishing off that look.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisDqFVDRlbeO4Zqpe-yXtc4SNO3AJFOPiZ09cK8Zcdvx0ne2vd7AziuFv8GSQ-xiOeN41VJGPfYs37DqoEEOR-Nqgn3w7rtBaC_q9HRBKsImGPUAOUGG3jHTFixN1EGpS9HvesyH1JoFA/s1600/IMG_5484s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisDqFVDRlbeO4Zqpe-yXtc4SNO3AJFOPiZ09cK8Zcdvx0ne2vd7AziuFv8GSQ-xiOeN41VJGPfYs37DqoEEOR-Nqgn3w7rtBaC_q9HRBKsImGPUAOUGG3jHTFixN1EGpS9HvesyH1JoFA/s320/IMG_5484s.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It is always astounding to me to see just how much difference the smallest little touch of clay will make on a piece. A sixteenth of an inch can make or break the look you were going for. It never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many pieces I've worked on. </div>

So, most of you know that I'm switching my web hosting service to InMotion. Yahoo has been a regular pain in the arse getting my registry key so I can make the official switch. The hold times on the phone are over an hour long at this point in time because of their switch from FTP to FTPS and morons who don't know how to change their settings are most likely plugging their phone lines. So, since I refuse to stay on hold for that long, I"m waiting for an e-mail. Still waiting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meantime, I'm finishing up lots of ponies! Photos of Jane's Reiner, Tanja's Victrix, Kayla's Stormwatch and Katrina's David will soon be up! And there are a several horses right on their heals too! I've been getting in some china action too - there's a local show in May that I'd actually like to bring some stuff too. And if I do, it's a great motivator to finish even more stuff. I'm *just* about finished with Morgan's chestnut Darcy, and I saw a reference photo for my bisque bone china Mulinette that went "POW! That's it!" to me. I couldn't wait to get started so while the cold-painted ponies were drying I'm giving Darcy a kiln buddy.</div>

That's all you get is this little sneak peek! And this shot has since been improved upon as of tonight. :)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here is our little science experiment from the last post. Notice she comes together quite nicely! Hopefully you can tell what breed she is now. :) She's looking *exactly* like my reference photo so I'm thrilled so far!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhLlAdQpR14GS3hlCau2sy-9Xb3pxhyphenhyphenlqlOsYBLFz3GfLpUg6Nv9ZugbdSFf5QK1n2BYkUyz7GpoyUVsEp6GS8Lx-YHIXqr69ztQhylH9YoA7PrXwXBBE8X2ZTjNOsIaE8oX4UQ2fvNHU/s1600/clementine1cs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhLlAdQpR14GS3hlCau2sy-9Xb3pxhyphenhyphenlqlOsYBLFz3GfLpUg6Nv9ZugbdSFf5QK1n2BYkUyz7GpoyUVsEp6GS8Lx-YHIXqr69ztQhylH9YoA7PrXwXBBE8X2ZTjNOsIaE8oX4UQ2fvNHU/s320/clementine1cs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The body comes together within a few hours usually. Mainly because I don't struggle with little intricate details as the body is a big mass with the exception of little wrinkles and rolls here and there. Getting those legs and head attached to the armature probably take the most time as that's where I do a lot of measuring. Once those things are on and secure, it's really hard to move them so it's best to make sure they're in the right spot to begin with. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirjQb9f5vCgsq9asvBH7YBp3QsznshNmLw2zjSwtPshTC9SaNJeZaPJwdEI0EYo8Ejm_bBrip-FHMUlwjQX-KXXVhxC7McCSG0iT4hSFo51zjlVSxoYO3q5rC4c1O8LghswS9cVyPWkuU/s1600/clementine1as.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirjQb9f5vCgsq9asvBH7YBp3QsznshNmLw2zjSwtPshTC9SaNJeZaPJwdEI0EYo8Ejm_bBrip-FHMUlwjQX-KXXVhxC7McCSG0iT4hSFo51zjlVSxoYO3q5rC4c1O8LghswS9cVyPWkuU/s320/clementine1as.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
And while pushing those legs around they are easy to snap so you have to be gentle. You can see in this photo I managed to break off a little chunk of the weight-bearing leg while I was putting it on to the armature. Doh! It was repaired relatively well though I'll count on this being an area in the master resin to pay attention to and fix more. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE2MVHIPrqjKdxkUBAExbq38mBk6Jp0JgRknkgbcLXLK20Ql9ZmWlKkebvixdndHjyrDK889xCrbPT029W6xI1FgeNbBp6xFyupkuDEvTz1HCXJiG-rVxOFMPoTFZrfOc36tooQelqrHM/s1600/clementine1bs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="279" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE2MVHIPrqjKdxkUBAExbq38mBk6Jp0JgRknkgbcLXLK20Ql9ZmWlKkebvixdndHjyrDK889xCrbPT029W6xI1FgeNbBp6xFyupkuDEvTz1HCXJiG-rVxOFMPoTFZrfOc36tooQelqrHM/s320/clementine1bs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I *lurve* the way her neck came out!!!! Thin and long and delicate. The nice thing about this gal is she'll be getting a roached mane so I won't have to cover it all up! The real horse has neck "rolls" just like this gals, even though she's not cresty. She's still got her neck just about as far back as it can probably go and all that skin has to compact to do so, even on an ASB. The trick was to not go crazy with them, as I usually tend to want to do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The other side to this gal has not been touched. So, while this side looks good, the other is a horrible mess. Nothing smudging around clay doesn't fix! And I'll need a base for her. I just want a little something around the front weight-bearing leg. Debating on whether to attach that or make it detachable. Still thinking on it. And this young little filly has a name now too - Clementine. </div>
<br />Jenn Scotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18074593821044398415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5416883687641068079.post-53992433268230966392013-02-26T21:39:00.000-07:002013-02-26T21:39:04.397-07:00Pieces of Ponies<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, while the snow has been coming down I've been guiltily spending time sculpting. I needed a break from the painting just to freshen myself up a bit. After pouring another layer of rubber on <a href="http://aspenleafstudios.blogspot.com/2012/09/a-peek-at-whats-around-bend.html" target="_blank">Mimi and Baldur</a> (Morgan mare and Icelandic Horse stallion), I decided to make a little more progress on a little filly I'm having lots of fun with!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I find myself wanting to do more "dynamic" poses lately along with the older mares. And I do like a challenge. I really like to take an element that I'm a little unsure of and really come to terms with it by incorporating it into sculpture. Darcy's element was the parked pose, Gawyn's was the drafty bulk and how to make all that hair peformance friendly, Baldur's is capturing the weight distribution and angles of a galloping turn, etc. Each piece had challenges, but those pieces had more readily described ones. This next piece incorporates leg angles in the movement as well as really dynamic shoulder action. Legs don't just move up and down, they move in and out too. It's hard to tell how much movement this pieces has until I put the legs onto a body, but I'm really happy with the results so far!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The leggies are pretty much as far along as they're going to get at this point. You'll see they're not all the way done near where they'd connect to the body. This is because I want to sculpt that part in - one for more stability of the sculpture, and two to create a smoother blend incorporating the "separate digit" from the piece. It'll look more seamless that way.</div>

Thanks to Liesl Dalpe for the inspiration of sculpting the legs separate from the body! This method of sculpting really works so much easier for me. I can pick up the legs and work around all the angles without trying to cram in a long-handled sculpting tool into a tight squeeze. They are also much easier to measure lengths this way. </div>

My favorite order of sculpting things seems to be start with the head (my absolute favorite part of a piece), then get the dirty work of the miserable legs out of the way next (I *hate* sculpting legs but I'm really making an effort to get better at them!), start the easy work of the body and assembling the entire piece as a whole, and then finish up with my second favorite part - hair. </div>

I received a photo of a painted Brigid from one of my customers today. This particular photo was one of the more fun ones as it involved ribbons and titles!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz9KOpTzPMVmNEt2XW0ypGJmp4we9kaIArteuyHIj1e9CmJUHDNYPjE-mXN8T-5Op0pfKrP_GSB8hDs_79G-ctQYExVLIcSli1AKuxK6TEV_AucPADg6RsjkGg8BiinrTs2iToELizUMU/s1600/BH_Brigid_rchsport_seatobay2013s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz9KOpTzPMVmNEt2XW0ypGJmp4we9kaIArteuyHIj1e9CmJUHDNYPjE-mXN8T-5Op0pfKrP_GSB8hDs_79G-ctQYExVLIcSli1AKuxK6TEV_AucPADg6RsjkGg8BiinrTs2iToELizUMU/s320/BH_Brigid_rchsport_seatobay2013s.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Owner Shay Canfield just sent me this image of her "Cherry Cordial" - a Brigid resin painted to red chestnut by Beth Hoffert. This is Cherry Cordial winning Reserve Champion Sport Breed at Sea to Bay live show today! Congrats to Shay and Beth and Cherry on the win! :D</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And yes, Brigid is still available in resin and being cast by MVS. All orders placed have had their ponies shipped out so there'll be virtually no wait on new copies ordered. So, it's taking me a while, especially on those resin pages as a lot of those particularly needed updating, but the new website design launch is hopefully a thing soon to come! You've noticed the blog design update I'm sure. I wanted more of a lighter feel with a hint of whimsy. I think with the curvy script (still very easy to read) and the lighter less symmetrical background design with softer colors, I get that feel. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are some peeks at what's to come! First up is the Equine Art index page. Nothing fancy, just a simple intro and gateway to all the site's equine areas:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7iEgJplJPysXy-t-3SQezEC5Ac2wzVG84Uv8E7L31sxRnJ7fz7rMOzUOtSmyY407ll9f2IIChwSGe4LFktbBYTtr1dPaUIGqg4Al86c6uXPAoWmP60OIgwDb86B183kDvjrHuYvORaeE/s1600/v2eindexs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="321" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7iEgJplJPysXy-t-3SQezEC5Ac2wzVG84Uv8E7L31sxRnJ7fz7rMOzUOtSmyY407ll9f2IIChwSGe4LFktbBYTtr1dPaUIGqg4Al86c6uXPAoWmP60OIgwDb86B183kDvjrHuYvORaeE/s400/v2eindexs.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Finishwork is the new title for the gallery section. The title bar, side buttons, and creamy background are the main design changes which move throughout the site. The Finishwork area will of course be up to date! There are a lot of painted ponies that happened since my last update forever ago.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUl6V6IPhT5Fr0npYrzMnf00ry5E2pROJTuaLuUM2uohs9i8ScESJ4Nxtk-t70JKvwjGUgW7cy4I1K1IBbi89DIbWzbFzYcteSCMsPGLbpqaFPOHlaNOAGQ9NghK2-sJp0GSyzJPD8vVc/s1600/v2efinishworks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUl6V6IPhT5Fr0npYrzMnf00ry5E2pROJTuaLuUM2uohs9i8ScESJ4Nxtk-t70JKvwjGUgW7cy4I1K1IBbi89DIbWzbFzYcteSCMsPGLbpqaFPOHlaNOAGQ9NghK2-sJp0GSyzJPD8vVc/s400/v2efinishworks.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The resin section of the page is also vastly outdated currently. So, this will be a very much needed pick-me-up to this section! You'll also notice that instead of calling the area "Sculptures/Resins" it's just called LE Resins now. Keep reading to find out why.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCheFt6JvtZVILxq6z13-o0RzIGLFGocNx0MIx0ivknRuamdx7O2gmmqyNonvfm9OvcDpfiGZmTzhCHlUPdbhNkZT1czmLr0NznefGhz-TvGrE5SXgZfWnp29aLh6GU6F3yieU1NIAFUI/s1600/v2eavailresinss.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCheFt6JvtZVILxq6z13-o0RzIGLFGocNx0MIx0ivknRuamdx7O2gmmqyNonvfm9OvcDpfiGZmTzhCHlUPdbhNkZT1czmLr0NznefGhz-TvGrE5SXgZfWnp29aLh6GU6F3yieU1NIAFUI/s400/v2eavailresinss.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Yep! Since I'm into ceramics now, they need their own pages too! Since I'm just starting out, obviously this section will be small at first; but it will grow! I'll have a page for each sculpture I cast in ceramic, and probably a one off finishwork page showing some examples of my work on other's clinky pieces. Seriously, because who doesn't like eye candy?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilSjiIicdx2BsFxdusJn1V1w9xBY7-_56ivT-X92lnXA34i17AL7OA-wxNFcRK2Qk1Fmn3NbbHUw7uOJKN0DjGBTz5FOUvUiWQfPCuXMFwhuhoDh0CKwIILIW56d_HFYlG-vyhc3Pt-Ak/s1600/v2eceramicss.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilSjiIicdx2BsFxdusJn1V1w9xBY7-_56ivT-X92lnXA34i17AL7OA-wxNFcRK2Qk1Fmn3NbbHUw7uOJKN0DjGBTz5FOUvUiWQfPCuXMFwhuhoDh0CKwIILIW56d_HFYlG-vyhc3Pt-Ak/s400/v2eceramicss.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So, you can see while it's nothing major, it's still in my opinion a great improvement over the current one - and not just in means of being up to date! Another very important part to the site update will be the policies that will now be listed in the sales area. I'm done with the finishwork and clinky sections. The next biggest section to tackle is the resins, and I'm almost halfway there. Policies will take a little time, but otherwise it'll be ready for the upload/reveal at that point! </div>

Last post I promised a viewing of the small collection of Deb McDermott resins I've painted over the years. Oddly enough, after uploading them all to the blog, I realized they were all chestnut base horses! At least the new David in progress (see previous post) is a palomino. I've got another David, my final copy, I plan on doing in dapple gray. I've also got a Pearl (the 5.5" one) I'll paint something (still don't know what for sure) for a sales piece way in the future, and a customized Gomez I'm going to have a hard time parting with that will be a buckskin going gray. We'll see what else ends up in my "stable" in the future as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So the exhibit. I guess we'd better start with the horse that really started it all, a David painted homozygous tobiano. He was quite the topic back when I did him several years ago. I remember I had been struggling with dapples. I decided to try a different technique than the one I'd been working with at the time and I still use it to this day. Oddly enough, the David in progress took that technique one more step further in my quest to get amazing dapples. He was also the first horse I shot with my new camera and I was still playing with all those features trying to get a good shot. </div>

The next McDermott piece I painted was a Persuasion - the original big'un the little Pearls were modeled after. She was finished shortly after the David above. I remember being so jazzed with how he came out that I wanted to start another horse right away. Since Persuasion was my only other piece of Deb's at the time, I chose her thinking if I'd had such great luck with him maybe it'd cary over. It did. While it doesn't show the amazing quality of depth and color in the photos, this horse is probably my best chestnut *ever*. No joke. This is really a must see in person horse. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Next up is another great chestnut. I warned you about the chestnut thing okay? This is Bint Soraya, another traditional Arabian mare. I do love the toasty color of this horse! I also remember struggling capturing that color on film. For some reason, with my usual neutral background, she was coming out orange in photos and I just couldn't color correct it to where it should have been. So, she got a black bg and all was good. This mare was one that finished up quickly - a week! Some of these kids just go easily and without a fuss like that. Trust me, I wish they all did. </div>

Mini Pearl I won't post too many shots of since you already saw her two posts ago. This little gem is definitely the most recent McDermott piece completed, being just a few days old. Coincidentally enough, she is owned by the same gal as the Persuasion above. </div>

Okay, so I'm a *huge* fan of Deb McDermott horses. I love that woman's work. And, her style of sculpting and my style of painting just seem to mesh really well. The end results are usually fantastic.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So naturally, when I got a chance to paint another David any way I wanted I was a very happy panda. He is probably my favorite sculpture by her to date. Here is a dark dappled palomino with some soot coming along. I love the way the overo markings just create even more movement in this piece and add just that much more "pizzaz." I'm usually not a huge fan of flashy paint jobs, but this guy has so much presence to him already, he can handle it without being overwhelmed.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Where's the other side? Not quite ready for photos. :) I need to add the layer of raw umber to bring out the soot and block in the markings on that side. Honestly, that's really all that's left to do besides finish the details.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm thinking I might have do grab an idea from Danielle Feldman's blog and do an artist collaboration post of pieces of Deborah's I've painted. There's not many, but the ones that have been done are definitely lookers!</div>

Jennifer Buxton mentions we've been having pretty cold days in Colorado on her blog. I'm up a few thousand feet from her, so we usually are about 10-15 degrees *colder*! It was -15 last night. The Saint Bernards are happy as clams. Myr is his cold, crabby self and hanging in there. Rocky, I'm convinced, is part polar bear. He is totally content to be out in this kind of weather. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I, am not. It was a great day to crank up the heat and stay inside! I figured I'd been spending a lot of time updating the blog with ceramics that it was time to post on painting again. So, since I got a lot done tonight, I'd show you a couple pics!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Technically this guy has been done for quite some time. But I never got around to taking photos of him until now. </div>

That color is super cool in person. Because it's layer upon layer of color, and those layers aren't fully opaque, you see this depth with the undertones coming through.</div>

I've got lots more horses that had a lot happen to them today, but only took photos of the ones that needed to ship soon. Photos take a lot of time so I decided to use that time painting. I know that means less eye candy, but it also means a blog post for later. :) </div>

So I like the idea of a at least once per month "In the Works Wednesday" column. There's always stuff going on over here, it's just a matter of taking the time to blog it. The latest stuff as I bet you've gathered is the ceramic side of things. Molds, bisques, and now...glazing! It's been something I've wanted to do for a while now. Getting to this point has been a culmination of all my cold painting and molding skills combined. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Since the type of glazing I'm doing is overglazing, it is very similar to cold painting. There are a few differences, but they are minor and I've adjusted techniques I used while oil painting to work with the slickness of the china. There have been some other challenges to pop up - like reds. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNGctQqKkvcqBptDBSVhkz45RWAwvQo6MiZehg-ji_0dmjlworr23HRvB2PBSszCi7hxkzr6ZzLkepGU8FYxuCI3G2K4iE7hqs5C79ZIsjxK36FtVG_fhyphenhyphenoPP7xPSQB2JY3AAG1ZISVHw/s1600/darcy2as.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNGctQqKkvcqBptDBSVhkz45RWAwvQo6MiZehg-ji_0dmjlworr23HRvB2PBSszCi7hxkzr6ZzLkepGU8FYxuCI3G2K4iE7hqs5C79ZIsjxK36FtVG_fhyphenhyphenoPP7xPSQB2JY3AAG1ZISVHw/s320/darcy2as.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Red glazes don't like you. You glaze a fantastic red horse, put it in the kiln, and take your horse out to see that the color has disappeared/fired off in the process. It took about 5 fires to find out what worked best. While browns that had a warm cast would give you a slightly reddish tone, I wanted fire-engine red abilities. I found it in a product called Rose Glow Additive by Jean Nordquist. It stabilized my reds enough so that I could fire them and not have them fire out. You can make out the red tones in the horse above. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Another challenge is not so much with the glazing, but with photographing. The horse above looks glossy, but she's not. Even the matte horse below looks shiny. The glazing just seems to reflect every little bit of light, which makes photography a nightmare. I will be dusting off my photo cube shortly. And, because I am doing many layers of transparent glazes, the colors are wonderfully deep and change depending on which way you look at her. It's a really nice realistic quality...that does not photograph. By the photo of the Darcy above, you'd never guess the amount of color and layering in that dark topline/forehand area. It just shows as one big mass of dark. I also see lots of unusual angles in photos of these guys to try to capture that changeability. </div>

This Darcy was meant to be a buttermilk buckskin, but she just kept telling me she wanted to be a dun. So, I've caved and given in to her wishes. I'm debating leaving her this chestnut dun, or making her a bay dun with the black legs and m/t. I'd love to hear thoughts from people as she'll be up for sale when finished. </div>

Silly title, I know. It's late. I decided not to post the new photos of the finished painted works because I'm *so* close to uploading the new website that I'll save them for there. The blog is more for the "in the works" stuff anyway. All those "in between" pictures of the piece before completion need a place too. This is it. So, in the spirit of that, here's some shots of some little misc. sculpture stuff I've been up to!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmDKjiTrrqHBNV7yYIXTkvDACx19MMB03Lt6aoufcMh8FsoQrYdojHcT9GIPxF3Z2IhDp4iM1jngego-K4sEn-vHLXY2ZKl5jKHFpn7ZM1CTjbWg5gnz_NLuGIkPomZ-NqNt8NZ95_NlI/s1600/molding1s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmDKjiTrrqHBNV7yYIXTkvDACx19MMB03Lt6aoufcMh8FsoQrYdojHcT9GIPxF3Z2IhDp4iM1jngego-K4sEn-vHLXY2ZKl5jKHFpn7ZM1CTjbWg5gnz_NLuGIkPomZ-NqNt8NZ95_NlI/s320/molding1s.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Remember those three sneak peek photos a few posts back? That's the Icelandic Horse hangin' in his second coating of rubber. All that good stuff is dripping down onto the Willy Remember Me portrait piece, who's in her first layer of rubber. Still lots of layers to go. I've been neglecting them too. The poor Icelandic, Baldur has been sitting in that first layer for over a month now. Mimi has been sitting there too, just sans rubber. It only takes me a half an hour or so to measure, mix, and apply the rubber to the two of them so I need to just set aside some time for them. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've also been experimenting with claybodying. For some time I've seen Darcy as an Arab, but never wanted to do all that customizing work in resin and Apoxie. Mud ponies provided the answer. :) </div>

I love it! Don't mind that back right foot. It's globby and will be sanded after she's bisque. I'm thinking fiery chestnut with chrome. Or a contrasty dappled rose gray. Not sure which way to go yet. The original Darcy bisqued is below so you can compare. </div>

We did not get "burned" in this fire and two lovely bisque Darcy's are the end result! Check out the photo of Darcy 1 and Darcy 2 (claybody custom) Karen e-mailed me this morning!</div>

What a nice way to start your morning, huh? I had gone up to Karen's yesterday for a quick lesson in how to work the kiln and programs. She wanted to see the real horses so she was nice enough to drive them down today for me. Aren't they gorgeous? I couldn't be more pleased. For all her amazing help and support I gave the claybody custom to Karen as a thank you. I cannot wait to see her work her glazing magic on it!</div>

The earthenware slip I used was Laguna's CN-401G and I was worried it was going to fire an off white/tan color. Turns out it is a nice white after all! Good to know as this stuff is very easy to obtain and comes in these great little 1 gallon containers. It's been very easy to work with, which is a big bonus for a newb at all this. </div>

The uber thick cable for my crazy huge wattage-sucking kiln came in, so I'll be juicing this bad boy up shortly. Now that I know what I'm doing has been successful, there will be many more clinky goodies to come!</div>

Well, the mold has been finished and is a success!! I have two casts out of it and will be aiming for a third this week.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The casts have to dry out completely before being fired. Here is the first "bone dry" Darcy. All the casts are hollow, but at this point they feel deceptively hard. They aren't. I was sanding the bottom of her hooves to make sure she was perfectly level and that back right one popped right on off. I'm hoping it fires okay!</div>

And this is a claybody custom in the "leather hard" stage. She's had all her pieces put together and has been out of the mold in my wet box for a few days. This is the point where I can really work with her and not worry about denting or deforming her. She's firm, but very easy to whittle away on. Notice the dark color of her vs. the above bone dry shots of the other mare. This is how much moisture content is in the slip! I'm not quite finished with the cleaning on this piece, but just about. </div>

I have to tell you just how much FUN it is to customize the clay! It's so completely different, and yet the same. You really have to have a soft touch, but once you get the feel for the medium it's amazing! Wrinkles are a breeze and come out SO nice! </div>

I'm really curious to see how this earthenware slip I bought fires. I had planned on buying the same stuff Karen G. uses but after months of waiting and bugging them, the supplier still hadn't made any so I had to look elsewhere. I've got a suspicion that this slip won't fire as "white" as the one I wanted. That's not a big deal for the initial few as it means they just won't have white markings as the white in china is made from wiping off the glaze to expose the bisque underneath. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I've got a "fire day" with Karen on the 8th as the wonderful woman that she is is going to walk me through the firing process since this will be my first time (EVER) firing a kiln. First time molding and first time slip casting were successes so I'm hoping for a trifecta! Wish me luck. :)</div>
